PEND. MADE IN U.S.A., brownish rubber with interior gripping teeth, patent filed by Charles S. Packer on Sept. 22, 1938 and awarded as No. 2,216,280 on Oct. 1, 1940 and assigned to the Justrite Manufacturing Co., Chicago, IL, Neil Tysver collection [This grip is one of those rare finds that makes our hobby so much fun. Thanks to Neil Tysver’s keen eye, two of these grips were discovered on a distressed Justrite bottom. The Justrite air cooled grip on the right that we’re familiar with is black rubber and twice as wide at 3/4 in. As claimed in the original patent filing, the grip was intended to provide a buffer such that the “lamp bowl may be projected against a hard surface for the purpose of dislodging the spent calcium carbide contained therein.” Furthermore, the patent claims “the buffer is so constructed as to provide ample air passage space between the body of the buffer ring and the lamp bowl… for effecting cooling of said bowl during operation of the lamp.” It appears that Justrite after an initial production of the grips discovered that the original patented grips were too small to accomplish the patent claims. The wider grip quickly replaced it in production and the rest is history. Since these two smaller grips are the first to be found in the mining artifact collecting community in 75 years after the patent, it’s unlikely many were made and most that were made were likely destroyed – a rare find indeed!]
